In early March we were able to visit the largest limestone caves in Asia when we traveled to see Hwangseongul Cave system in the mountains near Taebeck. It was a beautiful Spring day and when we arrived we we interested to note the entrance to the area was desined like a giant bat. The walk to the cave was about a mile, all up hill and the grade was very steep. The trail was improved , however, and there were handrails, ropes and steps much of the way. Never-the-less it was a chore to reach the cave entrance. The valley below the cave and the beautiful spires are shown in the 2nd and 3rd pictures. Near the cave entrance there was an attractive waterfall and the cave itself seemed to to go on forever. It was filled with many amazing formations and we snapped one shot showing a stream issuing from a side chamber. The trail through the cave was about 2 miles long. On the way back down we passed a number of buildings that were constructed in the traditional style including a traditional roof . The thick shakes appeared to be layed in tiers and then held in place by logs anchored to the rafters by wire and held in place by large granite rocks.
